Funny How A Melody Sounds Like A Memory

I’ve never played a musical instrument in my entire life, however music has always spoken directly to my soul. Especially the “old” stuff … ha, it sounds silly classifying ten/fifteen years ago as “old” – but the new music of this decade really doesn’t do too much for me. All of the songs that I could listen to over and over again for the rest of my life without getting annoyed are ones that previously put all of my over hormonal and confusing teenage years into beautiful words, or ones that I’d play over and over again on roadtrips with my high school and college girlfriends, or ones that I developed an emotional and physical attachment to because of dance. All of my absolute favorite artists are ones who I still have their entire CD(s) memorized … it seems like the artists of today sort of just have one or two hit wonders? I wonder why that is? What do you think?

Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

The Scientist – Coldplay

This Woman’s Work – Maxwell

Silent All These Years – Tori Amos

The Way I Am – Ingrid Michaelson

32 Flavors – Ani DiFranco

Good Riddance – Green Day

Steady As We Go – DMB

Brick – Bens Fold Five

Wonderwall – Oasis

Closing Time – Semisonic

Freshman – The Verve Pipe

Slide – Goo Goo Dolls

Ocean Avenue – Yellowcard

Hotel California – Eagles

Never Is A Promise – Fiona Apple

Bitch – Meredith Brooks

What are a few songs that you could listen to for the rest of your life?

I love so many of these songs! My heart swells every time I hear Wonderwall. <3 Also…I love in that Meredith Brooks YouTube that's actually Alanis Morissette's picture. But hey, two women who basically paved the way for angry 90s girl rock — I understand how someone could get them confused lol.

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

I love Wonderwall! Haaa I didn’t even realize that was Alanis when I was copy and pasting the code, whoopsies!

  • Tracy

ohh Ani DeFranco and Goo Goo Dolls are from Buffalo, where im from so love them. And ohhh how I love Maxwell, a womans work… LOVE!!

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

REALLY?! I didn’t know that, Tracy!! I’ve heard a few others sing This Woman’s Work, but Maxwell’s is my favorite version :)

  • bianca roman

ahhh i haven’t ‘freshman’ by the verve pipe in what seems like years!

i could listen to ‘konstantine’ by something corporate multiple times a day, every day of the week without getting sick of it.

Such a great list!!! Almost all of these songs would be on mine too!!!! I listen to several of these on Spotify on my way to work in the mornings. Best app ever!

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

Spotify is my FAVORITE! I hate paying for it and that it takes up data on my phone, but it’s so worth it :)

  • Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

oh I could listen to Slide over and over again. I could also listen to any En Vogue song on repeat as well

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

SLIDE! YES! Hahaha I’m adding En Vogue to my Spotify now!!

  • Erica Jacquline

I love so many of these songs! Especially DMB, Slide, and Closing Time! and I love the song the title of your post comes from too :)

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

      I knew I liked you, Erica ;)

  • Rachel N

Sympathy by Goo Goo dolls! Also I’ve been obsessed with Eric Church’s new song Give Me Back My Hometown lately. And Shake it Off my Florence and the Machine always.

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

Goo Goo Dolls bring me right back to high school every time :)

  • Amanda

    Love the Eagles.
I got to go to a special acoustic concert with only 40 other people to see Eric Church. It was amazing.

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

      WHAAAAAAT! That sounds incredible Amanda!!

  • Kaelene Spence

Coldplay and Oasis, I will never get bored of those two songs!

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

      I won’t either, Kaelene!!

  • Amber Thomas

Oh my gosh Wonderwall will ALWAYS remind me of college… Just when we started dating Jason hired a few frat guys to serenade me at lunch in the middle of campus. It was so corny and sort of embarrassing but TOTALLY made my day. To this day it makes my cheeks burn a little bit. :)

Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen was my dad’s favorite song because of the drum intro. That’ll be a forever favorite. And Mixed Tape by Jack’s Mannequin, oh my soul.

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

NO SIR. NO SIR. NO FLIPPING SIR. omgggggggg Amber!!!! hahahaha!!!!! I wish I could see! That Jason clearly has always been as sweet as pecan pie ;)

  • Justine B

Ah I love almost all of these!!!! There are only two I have never heard of (at least I think I haven’t). I might need to check them out since we are so close in music loves!

The Way I Am is such a perfect song :)

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

I hope that you listen to them and fall in love as much as I do! xo

  • Jamie

This list just gave me chills because so many of these are some of my absolute favorite songs. I just don’t understand a lot of music these days. I think that’s why I listen to mostly country and rock because both genres still have the ability to connect with my heart & soul.

    • Kym @ Travel Babbles

Isn’t that funny? I mean I enjoy many of the current hits … but like you said – none of them speak to my “heart and soul” like the old ones do!

  • Nikki Dockery

This playlist is spot on. Completely agree that this generation doesn’t have the music we had and it’s so sad to think they’ll never have music this amazing!

  • Ashley Rizzardo

The Goo Goo Dolls always! <3 High five on this suh-weet playlist! I also find myself drawn more to the older stuff than any of the newer music. I'm a big lyrics person and there are so few songs anymore that have some really catching lyrics for me (there are a few though!)

  • Kelli@She Crab Soup

I haven’t thought about that Maxwell song in years! I do love Bitch by Meredith Brooks, such an underplayed song. :)

  • Kerry

I used to love the heck out of DMB and Fiona Apple. I could listen to Torn by Natalie Imbruglia

  • Setarra

Oh yes, I still listen to Bitch like once a week. The song is my personal anthem :)

  • Brianna

YES to ocean avenue and wonderwall ugh those songs are my shit

  • Whitney Morris

Love me some Ingrid Michaelson! <3

  • Misty, Handbags + Handguns

That’s indeed Meredith’s song, but that’s a pic of Alanis in the video. Ha!

I have to agree with Wonderwall. That song will never get old.

  • Annessa

So many of these are so good! I love Brick, Freshmen, and Closing Time, 90’s jams always get to me. Some of my faves are: “They Way” – Fastball, “Can’t Touch This” – MC Hammer, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin” – Scissor Sisters, and “Campfire Kansas” by The Getup Kids. So Good!

  • Amanda MeeMee

So many good choices!!! I nodded my head at a LOT of these!

  • Jess

Wow I haven’t heard so many of these in a long time. They bring back such memories!

  • Jess @dearhealthyness

Anything Cold Play is on my list! I love most of their songs! I totally agree with you that today we have too many one hit wonder, and sadly, too many you-don’t-even-sing artist!!

  • Inner Loop Adventures

I could listen to Jimmy Eat World and be taken back to the good ol college days :) I love your picks though, reminded me of some of my favorite songs that I forgot about!

  • Jessi Even

This is a great list. I always forget how perfect ‘closing time’ is.

  • Ashley

Slide is one of my favorites!!! That is definitely one that could be on repeat with me as well!

  • Kate Hall

It’s like you took this straight from my iTunes! 100% agree on all of these, especially Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve. One of my top 5 songs of all times.

  • Shelby Hanchey

Loving this list. So many great memories (DMB, Verve, Ben Folds, I could go on and on). Old Kenny Chesney makes me think of high school and always makes me happy when I hear it. That and 90s rap haha

  • Cheyenne

So many songs I haven’t hear in such a long while, it brinks back so many memories listening again to them :)

  • Laurie Olsen

Oh this list. Fantastic. It brings me back.

  • Misty, Handbags + Handguns

I borrowed this idea for a post today. I credited you. :)

  • Chelsea Moos

Oh my God… I love you. That sounds super corny. But I’ll end it with, I completely agree that these will never go out of style and I will always be able to listen to them. :) You just gained a million cool points for having the same music taste :)

  • Christina McCall

A majority of these would be on my list as well … although when I think how long ago/how old I was when they came out … *buries head under covers*

  • Szandra Klement

Oh, I love this list, it reminds me some of my big farovites I haven’t listened for a long while! Thank you!

  • Emilie Bordeleau-Laroche

I love this list! Wonderwall is just such an amazing song! <3
